The Squeeze study
Ben Creagh-Brown
Professor Ben Creagh-Brown, Consultant Intensivist at Royal Surrey Hospital and Professor of Critical Care at University of Surrey, will present findings from the SQUEEZE study, an international observational cohort study examining postoperative vasopressor infusions (PVI) - a poorly defined "surgical shock" phenomenon. The study enrolled 25,675 patients across 228 hospitals in 42 countries, demonstrating that 3.9% of surgical patients required PVI, with substantial unexplained variation between hospitals and countries. Patients receiving PVI experienced significantly higher rates of complications, organ failure, and mortality. This presentation will explore the epidemiology of postoperative vasoplegia and discuss ongoing mechanistic research including the POLECAT study examining renin biomarkers and the JEDI studies investigating endothelial cell alterations, with consideration of future targeted therapeutic strategies.
