Lung ultrasound
Justin Kirk-Bayley
Ultrasound is nearly ubiquitous in the operating theatre environment, and few anaesthetics don't involve knowing what's going on with the lungs. So with the power of the probe already in your hand, we'll spend half an hour looking what you can see of the lungs, what it looks like under normal circumstances, what pathology looks like, and how to tell if ultrasound can help discern why the ventilator won't stop beeping.
Subjects to be covered:
Probe choice and settings
The normal lung examination under ultrasound
Reduced ventilation & atelectasis
Pneumonia & consolidation
Pleural effusion
Pulmonary oedema & fibrosis
Pneumothorax
And a video putting it all into practice!
