Antarctica
James Bowyer
Career breaks in anaesthesia can take many forms. This presentation reflects on 18 months spent as the British Antarctic Survey Medical Officer at Rothera Research Station during anaesthetic training. It explores the clinical, environmental, social and logistical challenges of delivering medical care in Antarctica, including COVID-proofing a remote research station, practising medicine without backup, and adapting anaesthetic skills to one of the most extreme workplaces on earth—alongside an inevitable abundance of seals and penguins.
